Mary Shelley: Sci-Fi Queen
As a writer, I find myself drawn to strong female authors. My college English professor was obsessed with Frankenstein and in every class he had the book on his syllabus. But I found it quite interesting while everyone may know the name Frankenstein, few seem to realize the book was written by a young woman. Or maybe they don’t want to admit women can spin a good yarn outside of romance?
Born of a radical mother and father, it is clear Mary was encouraged to think for herself in a time when women were often discouraged from such activities. Yes, she married a famous poet after a scandalous affair, but long after he died Mary established herself as a successful writer. So, the next time you think a lady can’t write anything a guy would want to read, remember Frankenstein and Mary Shelley!
